Tricentis Tosca vs Katalon vs Playwright: test automation tools compared
In short: for large, business-critical, multi-module systems (such as Dynamics 365 or SAP) where business testers also work on the suite, Tricentis Tosca is the strongest. For a fast, lower-cost start and mixed web, API and mobile testing, Katalon. If developers maintain the tests next to the code, Playwright, with no licence fee. We work with all three, so we are not arguing for one product — below we compare them criterion by criterion.
What is the difference between Tricentis Tosca, Katalon and Playwright?
The three tools represent three different philosophies. Tricentis Tosca is model-based: it scans the application UI into modules, test cases are built from these modules without code, and test data and test logic are managed separately. Katalon Studio is hybrid: you can start code-free with the recorder and keyword view, and switch to Groovy/Java scripting at any time; Selenium and Appium work underneath. Playwright is Microsoft’s open-source library and test runner: a test is a program, written by developers in the same repository and with the same tools as the application.
| Criterion | Tricentis Tosca | Katalon Studio | Playwright |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approach | model-based, no-code: scans the UI into modules from which test cases are built | hybrid: recorder and keyword view + Groovy/Java scripting; built on Selenium and Appium | code-based library and test runner: TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, .NET (C#), Java |
| Learning curve | business testers can learn it, but the method (modules, test case design) needs training | quick start with the recorder; a serious suite needs scripting skills | fast for developers; hard without a programming background |
| Maintenance | central modules: a UI change is fixed in one place | object repository and custom keywords; depends on disciplined structure | depends on code quality (Page Objects, helpers); stable locators and auto-waiting help a lot |
| Licence | enterprise licence, price on request | free base edition + paid plans | open source (Apache 2.0), free; developed by Microsoft |
| Testable surfaces | web, desktop, SAP, API, database, mobile and many other enterprise technologies | web, API, mobile, Windows desktop | web (Chromium, Firefox, WebKit) and API; mobile via browser emulation only |
| Dynamics 365 | dedicated Dynamics 365 support, recognises its controls | works on the web UI with more manual maintenance | works on the web UI; Dynamics controls need custom helpers |
| CI/CD | distributed execution, integration with Azure DevOps, Jenkins and other CI systems | command-line runs with Katalon Runtime Engine (licensed), ready-made CI integrations | native: runs in any CI (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins), with an official Docker image |
Which one is easiest to learn?
It depends on who is learning. For business testers and key users, Tricentis Tosca is the most accessible because no programming is needed — but model-based thinking (modules, reusable test steps, test case design) has to be learned, and Tricentis offers its own training and certification path for that. Katalon is the fastest to a first running test: record, replay, done. A real, maintainable suite, however, still requires scripting. For developers, Playwright is the most natural: a familiar language, a familiar IDE, a code generator (codegen) and a trace viewer for debugging; without a programming background it is hard.
Which tool is cheapest to maintain?
Most of the cost of test automation is not writing the tests but maintaining them: every UI change and every new release touches the suite. The difference depends not only on the tool but on the structure.
What do Tricentis Tosca, Katalon and Playwright licences cost?
Which tool is best for testing Dynamics 365?
The Dynamics 365 UI is rendered dynamically, with many custom controls (grids, lookups, the business process flow), and it receives two major updates a year. Tricentis Tosca recognises these controls through dedicated Dynamics 365 support, so for a large Dynamics suite it is the least brittle. Katalon and Playwright work on the web UI: both test Dynamics 365 well, but the controls need custom helper functions — which we bring to our projects.
How this protects you against Microsoft’s twice-yearly updates in practice is described in Dynamics 365 test automation and release waves.
How do the tests run in CI/CD?
All three tools plug into the deployment pipeline, so the regression suite runs before every deployment and every night. Playwright is the simplest here: it starts from the command line, runs in any CI system (Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, GitLab, Jenkins), has an official Docker image and runs in parallel. Katalon runs from the command line with Katalon Runtime Engine, which requires a licence. Tricentis Tosca uses distributed execution on dedicated agent machines and integrates with Azure DevOps and other CI systems; setup takes more work, but it scales well for large suites.
Who should choose which tool?
Can you migrate from one tool to another?
Yes, but there is no automatic converter between the three tools: tests have to be rebuilt in the new tool. What carries over — and it is the larger part of the work — is the test case logic (steps, expected results), the test data and the risk ranking. That is why migrating a well-documented suite is much faster than starting from scratch.
Typical directions: from a legacy Selenium suite to Playwright (more stable runs, fewer flaky tests), from a Katalon suite grown out of recordings to a structured Katalon or Tosca suite, or from Tosca to Playwright for the web parts when the licence budget shrinks. During migration we run the old and new suites in parallel until the new one delivers the same coverage.
How do we help with tool selection and implementation?
We work with all three tools, so our recommendation fits your system, your team and your budget, not a product. After discovery we justify the choice in writing, build a risk-based test suite, wire it into CI and maintain it together with the system.

Frequently asked questions
Is Tricentis Tosca or Katalon better?
There is no universal winner. For large, business-critical, multi-module systems and large suites, the model-based maintenance of Tricentis Tosca is cheaper in the long run. For smaller systems, a fast start and a smaller budget, Katalon is the better choice.
Is Playwright free?
Yes. Playwright is open source (Apache 2.0), developed by Microsoft, with no licence fee. The cost is the developer effort to write and maintain the tests.
Do you need to code for Tricentis Tosca?
No. Tricentis Tosca is a no-code, model-based tool; test cases are built from modules. The method still has to be learned, and in complex cases technical knowledge (e.g. API, database, TQL) helps a lot.
Can Playwright test Dynamics 365?
Yes, the Dynamics 365 web UI can be tested well with Playwright. Dynamics controls (grids, lookups, business process flow) need custom helper functions, which we provide for our projects.
Can we keep our existing Selenium tests?
Yes. We take over the existing suite, stabilise it and wire it into CI; where it pays off we migrate it step by step to Playwright or another tool, running both suites in parallel for a while.
