Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys: implementation and migration

Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys is Microsoft’s marketing automation app and the successor of Dynamics 365 Marketing: email, SMS, forms, events, lead scoring and consent on the same Dataverse database your sales and service teams use. We implement it, move you off legacy outbound marketing, design the journeys and connect them to Dynamics 365 Sales — in English, German and Hungarian.

What is Customer Insights – Journeys?

Customer Insights – Journeys is the marketing automation application of Dynamics 365: you define who hears from you, when and on which channel, and what happens when the customer responds. In 2023 Microsoft renamed Dynamics 365 Marketing and combined it with its Customer Insights customer data platform; the bundle is now Dynamics 365 Customer Insights, with two parts: Journeys (journeys and campaigns) and Data (unified customer profiles).

What sets it apart from a standalone email tool: Journeys works on your CRM data. It is the same contact, lead and opportunity the salesperson sees in Dynamics 365 Sales; campaign responses, form submissions and lead scores flow back to the record. No exports, no second customer list.

What do Journeys and Data do?

AreaWhat it doesPart
Real-time journeysevent- or segment-based journeys: a form fill, web visit, purchase or CRM change triggers the next step; branching, waits, A/B testsJourneys
Email, SMS, pushdesigner with templates and content blocks, personalisation from Dataverse data; multiple languagesJourneys
Forms and landing pagesmarketing forms embedded in your own website; a submission creates a lead or contact and can start a journeyJourneys
Event managementevents, sessions, speakers, registration, reminders, check-inJourneys
Lead scoringscores from behaviour and data; sales-ready leads are handed to Dynamics 365 SalesJourneys
Consent managementconsent per contact point, compliance profiles, preference centre, unsubscribe — for GDPRJourneys
Unified customer profilemerging several sources (CRM, web shop, ERP, spreadsheets) into one profile, segments, measuresData

Customer Insights – Data is needed when customer data sits in several systems (CRM, web shop, ERP, loyalty programme) and you want one unified profile and shared segments. If all relevant data is already in Dataverse, Journeys alone may be enough; the licence covers both.

What happened to outbound marketing?

The legacy outbound marketing module of Dynamics 365 Marketing is gone: Microsoft phased it out after 30 June 2025 and removed it from all environments in May 2026. Real-time journeys is the supported path. If you used the old module, your emails, forms, segments and journeys have to move to real-time.

The move is not a switch. Real-time journeys use a different segment builder, a different consent model (consent per contact point, compliance profiles) and different forms, so existing content has to be reviewed: what is still used is converted, the rest is left behind. It is also a good moment to clean out old campaigns nobody maintains.

If you still run marketing on a legacy Dynamics CRM (on-premises or an older online version) or with a third-party tool such as ClickDimensions, that can be brought to Journeys too — we have worked on email marketing integration since 2017.

How much does the Customer Insights licence cost?

Licence (Microsoft list price for Hungary, 1 October 2026)Price (EUR excl. VAT)Included
Customer Insights (Journeys + Data)€1,473.00 per tenant / monthunlimited users; 10,000 engaged and 100,000 unified persons included

Source: Microsoft Dynamics 365 pricing, Hungarian page, 1 October 2026; list prices are indicative. The licence is per tenant, not per user, so the size of your marketing team does not change it; what counts is the number of engaged and unified persons, above which capacity packs are needed. As a reseller we supply the licence too — see licensing. Implementation fees depend on scope.

How does an implementation or migration work?

  1. 1
    Discovery

Which campaigns run today, on which channels, with which data; if outbound marketing is in use, an inventory of it. Output: target state and migration list.

  2. 2
    Foundations

Sending domain authentication, brand profile, consent model, templates, security roles. Without these no email goes out properly.

  3. 3
    First journeys

One or two simple, measurable journeys (e.g. a welcome series or event registration) live early, so the team uses the tool from the start.

  4. 4
    Migration and extension

Converting legacy assets, lead scoring, hand-over to Sales, more journeys and channels.

  5. 5
    Testing and training

Journeys, forms and consent tested in a sandbox; training for the marketing team, short guides.

  6. 6
    Go-live and support

Switching off legacy assets, follow-up, further development.

Frequently asked questions

What is the successor of Dynamics 365 Marketing?

Dynamics 365 Customer Insights – Journeys. In 2023 Microsoft renamed Dynamics 365 Marketing and bundled it with its Customer Insights customer data platform (now Customer Insights – Data). The legacy outbound marketing part has been retired; real-time journeys is the supported part.

Do we need Dynamics 365 Sales?

Not necessarily: Journeys runs on Dataverse and works on its own. Most of the value, however, comes from running it with Sales, because lead scoring, hand-over and campaign responses reach the salesperson directly.

How much does it cost?

Microsoft’s Hungarian list price (1 October 2026) for Customer Insights (Journeys + Data) is €1,473.00 per tenant per month with unlimited users; 10,000 engaged and 100,000 unified persons are included. Implementation depends on scope.

What is the difference between Journeys and Data?

Journeys is execution: journeys, email, SMS, forms, events. Data is the data platform: unified profiles from several sources, segments, measures. The licence includes both; Data pays off when customer data lives in several systems.

Can outbound marketing assets be migrated?

Partly. Real-time journeys handle segments, forms and consent differently, so these have to be converted; most email content can be reused. In discovery we list item by item what can be moved and what should be rebuilt.
